Abbott Announces Preliminary Damage Assessments For Southeast Texas Storm Damage

Governor Greg Abbott directed TDEM to request SBA officials to conduct assessments to determine if southeast Texas communities can receive federal disaster assistance.

The SBA will join state and local partners to conduct preliminary damage assessments. These assessments will determine the magnitude of the impact caused by disasters.

"These assessments will provide the accurate, on-the-ground information needed to secure crucial federal assistance for Texans who need it most," Governor Abbott said in a statement. "Texans are urged to report damages to their homes or businesses through TDEM’s iSTAT survey. Together, we will ensure communities in Southeast Texas affected by these storms have what they need to rebuild and recover."

Communities across Texas have been affected by the recent weather. Last week, on Nov. 24, a tornado swept through Houston, leaving a trail of destruction throughout Harris County. This week, a cold front is sweeping across the state of Texas.

"Texas stands ready to respond and swiftly deploy all necessary resources to support local officials with response operations and ensure the safety of Texans," Abbott affirmed. "Texans are urged to remain weather-aware and heed the guidance of state and local officials and emergency response personnel to protect themselves and their loved ones."

Last month, Abbott activated state emergency response resources and increased the readiness level of the Texas State Emergency Operations Center to support these southeastern communities. Officials urge Texans who have experienced weather-related damage to report it at damage.tdem.texas.gov.
