Governor Abbott sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent this week requesting the treasury department to suspend CAIR’s status as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization.
In the letter, Abbott argues that CAIR is the successor to the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization that was recently designated a terrorist group. "Federal investigators and court fillings identify CAIR as a direct subsidiary of the Muslim Brotherhood and as a 'front group' for Hamas in the United States," Abbott stated in the letter.
Just last month, President Trump designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization. Per the letter, Trump stated that “‘[f]inal documents are being drawn’ to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization and that ‘[i]t will be done in the strongest and most powerful terms.’”
The letter alleges that the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR have ties to HAMAS. “Federal investigators and court filings identify CAIR as a direct subsidiary of the Muslim Brotherhood and as a “front group” for Hamas in the United States,” the letter reads.
Taking similar action to the President, Abbott designated the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as terrorist organizations in a recent proclamation. “The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR have long made their goals clear: to forcibly impose Sharia law and establish Islam’s ‘mastership of the world,’" Governor Abbott declared.
Secretary Bessent has yet to respond to the letter. The future of these organizations have yet to be decided on a national level.
