Colin Allred Leads Julie Johnson in Race for House District 33

Former Representative Colin Allred leads Rep. Julie Johnson in a new Texas House District 33 poll.

Colin Allred, the former representative of Texas’s 32nd Congressional District, announced his bid for TX-33 earlier this month after incumbent Marc Veasey filed to run for Tarrant County Judge. Allred's main challenger in the democratic primary is Rep. Julie Johnson of the 32nd Congressional District.

A recent poll solidified Allred’s candidacy by showing a strong lead in the race for Texas's 33rd congressional seat. The GBAO survey was conducted among 500 likely democratic voters, resulting in 58% supporting Allred, 30% supporting Johnson and 12% remaining undecided.

The newly-redrawn 33rd District is now Dallas based. Allred’s campaign is highlighting his background with the city, focusing on his economic struggles growing up with his mother.

Despite his history with the city and the recent poll, Rep. Johnson still has a wide range of support from constituents and fellow lawmakers. Last week, Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar endorsed Rep. Johnson.

“Their support reflects the work I’ve done in Congress — delivering results and staying focused on the job,” said Johnson in a post on X.

In an interview with CBS News, Johnson discussed her race against Allred.

“I have to wonder if a different member of Congress was sitting in this same seat, would he have made the same decision?” she said. “I don’t think he would have.”

Johnson mentioned that many of her female constituents have reached out about Allred’s abrupt entrance into the race, sharing that they are “very upset” with his decision.

With less than three months til the primary, the outcome of the election remains uncertain for the Democratic candidates.
