Governor Greg Abbott (R) delivered remarks at the Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Mid-Winter Conference, reaffirming his administration's commitment to supporting Texas veterans and honoring those who have served the nation overseas.
Addressing an audience of veterans and advocates, Abbott emphasized the foundational role service members have played in preserving American freedom and global security.
"We wouldn't be America today without those willing to fight and defend our freedom and our country across the entire globe," said Abbott. "It is essential to the future of our country that Texans at every age level know who you are and what it is that you did. As long as I'm your Governor, you have a Governor who has the back of Texas veterans."
During his remarks, Abbott highlighted Texas's role in national defense, noting that the state is home to more than 1.7 million veterans and active-duty service members. He credited veterans' bravery and sacrifice as the reason Texas serves as the backbone of America's military readiness.
Abbott also highlighted recent legislative actions aimed at enhancing the lives of veterans and their families. He cited his signing of House Joint Resolution 133, which permanently establishes a franchise tax exemption for veteran-owned businesses, a move intended to encourage entrepreneurship and economic stability among veterans transitioning to civilian life.
In addition, the Governor noted the allocation of $50 million for ibogaine clinical trials, a potential treatment being studied for its ability to address conditions such as post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury among veterans.
Abbott concluded by reiterating that supporting veterans remains a top priority for his administration, stressing that Texas will continue to lead in providing resources, recognition, and opportunity for those who have worn the uniform.
