Ken Paxton
Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-TX) announced this week that his office is investigating a major real estate development in Kaufman County, calling it a potentially illegal "sharia city.
Currently, a company called SEE Holding, based in Dubai but operating through a U.S. subsidiary, has teamed up with Kaufman Solar LLC to buy thousands of acres of land near Kaufman, Texas.
According to reports, the developers plan to build what they're calling a "sustainable city" that could eventually house up to 20,000 people, many of whom may come from other countries.
The project has sparked concern among some residents who worry the development might operate under different rules than the rest of Texas.
Paxton's office has sent formal requests to both companies demanding detailed information about their plans, including any conversations they've had with local government officials, how the two companies are connected, and specifics about the land purchases.
"There will be no 'sharia city' in Texas under my watch," Paxton emphasized. He added that his office will thoroughly review whether any laws have been broken.
The companies involved have not yet publicly responded to the investigation. Paxton emphasized that the purpose of the inquiry is to determine exactly what kind of development is being planned and whether it complies with Texas law.
“While you’re on American soil, you will obey America’s laws,” he concluded.
