State Department Announces Foreign Relations of the United States Publication Digitization

The Department of State (DoS) announced this week the release of Foreign Relations of the United States, 1958–1960, Volume V, Microfiche Supplement, American Republics, in a new digitized format.

“This publication supplemented the print volume of Foreign Relations of the United States, 1958–1960, Volume V, American Republics,” according to the media note from the State Department’s Office of the Spokesperson.

“From 1993 to 1998, the Foreign Relations series published 13 microfiche supplements with facsimiles of additional documents expanding upon issues addressed in corresponding print volumes in the Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy subseries that could not be printed due to space limitations,” the statement continues.

The statement confirms that the Office of the Historian is formatting the prints into digitized versions and publishing them in its “full-text searchable and date-sortable online Foreign Relations portal.”

The Office of the Historian oversees the preparation and publication of the official documented history of the US’s foreign policy, which is placed in the “Foreign Relations of the United States” series.

“Published since 1861, the series contains documents from numerous government agencies that reveal how U.S. foreign policy was created and executed at the highest levels,” the Office’s mission statement reveals.

“Additionally, the Office prepares policy-supportive historical studies, helps train Department personnel through historical components taught in Foreign Service Institute courses, and answers historical research questions from scholars, educators, students, journalists, and other agencies,” the statement continues.
