James Talarico
After endorsing Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that she is now backing state Rep. James Talarico (D-TX).
The Democratic lawmaker entered the primary race in September 2025, vowing to go after billionaires. He quickly rose up the ranks in name appeal by scoring interviews with the likes of Joe Rogan and Stephen Colbert. On election night, Texas voters sent him over the first hurdle by backing his campaign over Rep. Crockett's campaign in a 53% to 45.8% vote.
Rep. Crockett initially signaled that she would challenge the vote, but she soon announced her concession on social media, noting that she would be "working to elect democrats up and down the ballot."
As state Rep. Talarico now heads to the November election, Vice President Harris is providing a boost for the senatorial hopeful with an endorsement.
"I congratulate James Talarico for his win, and the inspiring campaign he continues to build," the vice president said in a statement. "I appreciate that he is making the case for the kind of civic renewal our country needs. I offer him my full support in the months ahead."
Vice President Harris initially endorsed Rep. Crockett, going as far as recording a robocall to urge voters to back her senatorial campaign. In her statement endorsing state Rep. Talarico, the former vice president also saluted Rep. Crockett for her effort.
Calling Rep. Crockett a "dear friend," Vice President Harris commented that "she waged this campaign with the trademark fierceness that has defined her so far. I am grateful for her friendship and the support she has provided me over the years, including as co-chair of my presidential campaign."
The former vice president concluded her statement by urging voters to take part in "something historic this fall."
"Now is the time for Democrats to unite behind our nominee so that we can build on this wave of momentum, turn Texas blue and win victories up and down the ballot this November," she charged.
Before state Rep. Talarico can turn the Texas U.S. Senate seat blue -- which is a feat of its own -- Texas voters will first decide who his Republican challenger will be. Incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and Attorney General Ken Paxton are scheduled to face off in a runoff election on May 26.
Vice President Harris has also signaled in recent weeks that she "might" run for president again in 2028, so she could hit the campaign trail with state Rep. Talarico as she mounts support for her third attempt at the White House.
