Houston Receives $10 Million Federal Transit Funding Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced more than $100 million in federal funding for public transit systems in cities preparing to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Houston receiving nearly $10 million to improve transportation infrastructure ahead of the global event.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the funding -- distributed through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) -- will help host cities expand transit services as they prepare to welcome millions of visitors for the tournament.

"DOT is doing its part to ensure the United States is ready to host the most spectacular World Cup in history," said Duffy, emphasizing that the investments will help provide fans with a seamless travel experience as matches and surrounding events take place.

Among the recipients, Houston's public transit system will recieve $9,092,387 in federal grant funding. U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R) welcomed the announcement, noting the city will face a surge in travel demand when the tournament arrives.

"The 2026 World Cup is just around the corner, which brings hundreds of thousands of fans to Houston in need of a safe mode of transportation to seamlessly travel to and from stadiums," said Cornyn. "I'm grateful these resources will enhance public transit to help meet the expected surge in demand and create memorable experiences for players, teams, and fans."

Houston is expected to host several matches at NRG Stadium as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is projected to generate more than $1.5 billion in economic activity and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region.

The funding, made possible through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026, will support planning, capital projects, and operating expenses tied to World Cup events.

Cornyn highlighted broader federal efforts tied to the tournament, including $625 million in funding for public safety in host cities through President Donald Trump's Working Families Tax Cuts Act.

As Houston prepares to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, federal funding for transit improvements is expected to play a key role in managing the surge of visitors. Lawmakers say the investments will help ensure both fans and residents benefit from improved transportation systems during the historic event.
