RPOF Applauds Court Ruling Defending Free Speech and Rejecting Meritless Lawsuit

Tallahassee, FL – The Republican Party of Florida today applauded a court ruling dismissing with prejudice a lawsuit against the Manatee County Republican Executive Committee and its chairman, Mark Flanagan, reaffirming the fundamental importance of free speech in the political arena.

A Manatee County circuit court judge determined the claims at issue targeted constitutionally protected political expression and failed under Florida Anti-Speech SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) statute, which is designed to prevent lawsuits that seek to stifle political discourse on matters of public concern.

“Republicans will always stand firmly in defense of free speech,” said RPOF Chairman Evan Power. “We will not back down on efforts to silence political expression through baseless lawsuits. Open debate is essential to our democracies, and this ruling clear that Florida law protects that right.”

The Florida court’s decision underscores a bedrock principle: political speech, especially on public issues, must remain open, and protected from frivolous attacks.

The dismissal with prejudice brings the case to a close and reinforces the broad protections afforded to individuals and organizations engaging in political discourse.

The Republican Party of Florida remains committed to defending the constitutional rights of Floridians and ensuring that political debate remains free and open.
