John Cornyn Cracks Down on Fraud and Recovering Funds

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R) has introduced the Protecting American Taxpayers Act, a sweeping legislative package aimed at cracking down on fraud, recovering stolen federal funds, and strengthening safeguards for American taxpayers.

The bill includes several measures, most notably Cornyn's Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion (VSAFE) Act, which would establish a dedicated fraud prevention officer within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

"Congress must do more to protect innocent Americans who are being defrauded left and right while crooks and illegal migrants profit," said Cornyn. "I'm proud to join my colleagues on this package of legislation, which includes my VSAFE Act to protect veterans from scams, to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly, scammers are held accountable, and fraud is rooted out once and for all."

The broader package, led by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), includes a wide range of provisions designed to address fraud across multiple fronts. Among them are efforts to establish a federal task force to combat deepfake scams, extend statutes of limitations for prosecuting fraud related to COVID-19 relief funds, and require enhanced oversight of federal payments through improved tracking systems.

Additionally, the legislation seeks to recover billions in unused or improperly allocated funds, including more than $65 billion in unspent COVID-19 relief. It would also incentivize whistleblowers and government employees to identify fraud by offering financial rewards for uncovering waste and abuse.

To further protect taxpayer dollars, the bill introduces stricter accountability measures for federal spending, including transparency requirements for previously undisclosed expenditures and restrictions on funds flowing to foreign entities under sanctions or embargoes.

Supporters argue the legislation is a comprehensive effort to restore fiscal responsibility and public trust, particularly as fraud and misuse of federal funds have become increasingly sophisticated in recent years.

If enacted, the Protecting American Taxpayers Act would mark one of the most expansive federal efforts in recent years to combat fraud, enhance oversight, and ensure taxpayer dollars are protected. With bipartisan concerns over government waste continuing to grow, the bill positions itself as a significant step toward accountability and financial integrity in federal programs.
