U.S. Representative Greg Casar (D) has introduced legislation that would double federal overtime pay from time-and-a-half to double-time for hours worked beyond 40 in a week, a change supporters say could benefit more than 13 million workers.
Rep. Casar, Joined by Reps. Pamila Jayapal (D-WA) and Steven Horsford (D-NV) introduced the Double Wage for Overtime Act, which would increase overtime compensation for the first time since federal overtime rules were established nearly 90 years ago.
Under current law, employees receive time-and-a-half pay for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. The proposal would raise that rate to double a worker's regular hourly wage.
Supporters say a worker earning $25 per hour who works 10 overtime hours each week could receive approximately $6,500 in additional annual earnings if the legislation becomes law.
Backers argue the measure would help workers cope with rising living costs while discouraging employers from relying excessively on overtime.
Representative Greg Casar: "Too many Americans are working extra hours but still not making enough to get ahead," said Casar. "If you work overtime, this bill would put money in your pocket by requiring your employer to pay you double for extra hours."
Representative Pramila Jayapal: "The Americans are facing an affordability crisis."
Representative Steven Horsford: "This legislation ensures they no longer have to fight just to get ahead."
The legislation is endorsed by several major labor organizations, including:
The Double the Wage for Overtime Act would significantly increase overtime compensation for millions of workers by requiring employers to pay double-time rather than time-and-a-half for hours worked beyond a standard 40-hour workweek.
