Oklo has received final U.S. Department of Energy safety approval for its Groves Isotope Test Reactor in Lockhart, Texas, moving the advanced nuclear project into its final startup phase with the company targeting first criticality later this month.
Advanced nuclear technology company Oklo Inc. announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has approved the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) for its Groves Isotope Test Reactor in Lockhart, Texas.
The approval was issued under the DOE's Reactor Pilot Program and marks the completion of the reactor's formal safety documentation process.
According to the company, the project now advances into the DOE's final pre-startup review before operations can begin.
With both the Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis (PDSA) and the final Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) approved, the remaining steps include:
Oklo says Groves is the first advanced reactor project under the DOE Reactor Pilot Program to reach this stage while being built on privately owned land using commercially sourced fuel, equipment, and systems.
The Lockhart facility is expected to support doemstic production of critical medical and industrial isotopes used for:
Oklo Co-Founder and CEO Jacob DeWitte: "It is the first advanced reactor project to receive approval of its Documented Safety Analysis that is on privately owned land, with wholly commercially sourced fuel, equipment, and systems delivered by the private sector."
DeWitte added that the project demonstrates how advanced nuclear reactors can move from construction to operation on a commercial timeline while maintaining federal safety oversight.
Oklo's Groves Isotope Test Reactor in Lockhart has reached a major regulatory milestone after receiving final DOE safety approval. If the remaining federal reviews are completed on schedule, the reactor could begin startup operations and achieve first criticality later this month, marking another step forward for Texas' growing advanced nuclear industry.
