AEP Texas has secured up to $3.26 billion in financing from the U.S. Department of Energy to modernize its electric grid, improve reliability, and support rapid growth across Texas while delivering an estimated $685 million in customer savings over the next three decades.
AEP Texas announced it has agreed to a loan of up to $3.26 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF) to help fund major infrastructure improvements aimed at strengthening the state's electric grid.
According to AEP Texas, the investment will support nearly 100 transmission projects spanning approximately 2,800 miles designed to improve grid reliability, expand capacity, and accommodate growing electricity demand across one of the nation's fastest-growing regions.
The projects are expected to:
AEP Texas has already signed Letters of Agreement supporting up to 41 gigawatts (GW) of potential new electric load additions through 2030, reflecting increasing demand driven by population growth, industrial development, and large-scale energy users.
The utility estimates the federal financing will generate approximately $685 million in total customer savings over the next 30 years, helping offset the cost of major infrastructure investments while maintaining affordability.
President and Chief Operating Officer of AEP Texas, Adrian Rodriguez: "Texas is poised for incredible growth over the next five years. AEP Texas is committed to enabling this opportunity, while leveraging resources to deliver future savings for our customers."
This loan is part of American Electric Power's (AEP) broader strategy across its 11-state service territory to secure federal financing for grid modernization projects while reducing long-term costs for customers.
As Texas continues to experience significant economic and population growth, utilities have increasingly focused on expanding transmission infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand and improve system reliability during extreme weather and peak usage periods.
