Trump Threatens to Delay Senate August Recess Until SAVE America Act Passes

With two weeks left for members of the United States Senate before leaving for summer recess, President Donald Trump is continuing to ramp up pressure on Republican members to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.

Earlier this week, the president reinforced his repeated calls on Senate Republicans to do whatever it can to pass the election integrity and voter-ID bill before members leave. This push comes so the election security measures can be implemented before the November midterms.

President Trump specifically called out Majority Leader and Senator John Thune (R-SD).

“John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump is not the only one suggesting members stay through the recess. As of this week, the Senate needs one more vote to force a roll call vote on ending the August recess.

By abolishing the filibuster’s 60-vote threshold, the president claimed Republicans can pass “everything they ever dreamed of,” including the defense budget that passed the House of Representatives last week.

If Republicans don’t move to terminate the filibuster, Trump warned that Democrats could beat them to it if the midterms turn out in the party’s favor.

“The Dumocrats will do it on day one, and can’t believe how lucky they got with this Senate leadership,” he said. “Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!”

The president’s anxiety over a potential Democratic-majority after November became more apparent yesterday after he spoke to reporters on Air Force One.

“If they [Senate Republicans] don’t get it done, it’s going to be a very bad thing for the party,” Trump said. “We have some Republicans that I will not comment on, a few of them, probably four, that we probably won’t get the vote [from].”
