Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (D) criticized recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in South Texas, arguing the raids are creating fear in local communities and contributing to workforce shortages while calling for immigration enforcement focused on violent criminals.
According to Rep. Gonzalez, the ICE enforcement actions have caused widespread fear among families and businesses throughout the Rio Grande Valley, with some residents reportedly avoiding work, school and other daily activities.
Gonzales said he supports border security and the enforcement of immigration laws but criticized what he described as overly aggressive enforcement tactics.
Rep. Vicente Gonzalez: "Every nation has a right to enforce its immigration laws, but there is a clear line between enforcing the law and the inhumane tactics being used across South Texas and the country."
He said immigration enforcement should prioritize individuals convicted of violent crimes rather than targeting workers and long-term community members.
The congressman argued that recent ICE operations are affecting key industries throughout South Texas by creating labor shortages.

Gonzales said he is working with local officials, including Port Isabel Mayor Martin Cantu Jr., to encourage what he described as commonsense immigration solutions that protect public safety while preserving the region's workforce.
He also encouraged constituents in Texas' 34th Congressional District who believe they or a family member have been wrongfully detained by ICE to contact his congressional office for assistance.
