Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is launching an investigation into major food manufacturers over misleading “Heart Healthy" labeling.
Why does this matter?
Paxton plans to expose companies who label their products as “heart healthy,” when in reality they are the opposite.
What are people saying?
As part of the nationwide “Make America Healthy Again”, or MAHA, movement, Paxton is bringing it to Texas.
“I am committed to Making America Healthy Again, and this is another piece of that broad effort to protect Texans’ health and well-being,” said Paxton in a press release.
Paxton accused food labels of being misleading, focusing on the absence of “bad” ingredients such as cholesterol or sodium. He accused multiple products of being high in Omega-6 fatty acids, which increase the risk of heart disease, inflammation, obesity, cancer and other autoimmune diseases.
Companies under investigation include Frito Lay, Flora Food Group and ACH Foods.
“I have seen that many products with this ‘heart-healthy’ label can actually impair heart function,” said Paxton in the press release.
The office of the Attorney General will investigate whether these companies’ advertising practices are accurate and determine if they violate the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
The investigation aims to expose companies misrepresenting the health value of their products.
