Governor Greg Abbott (R) is asking Texas Comptroller Don Huffines to conduct financial reviews of up to four school districts to determine whether taxpayer dollars are being spent as intended.
Gov. Abbott has requested that Comptroller Huffines conduct formal financial reviews to examine how districts are using public education funding and whether taxpayer dollars are reaching classrooms, teachers, and students, as intended.
The request comes as Texas makes what Abbott described as historic investments in public education. The governor said the state has committed $104.9 billion in taxpayer funds to K-12 education and argued that the money should be focused on student outcomes rather than administrative growth.
Gov. Greg Abbott: "As Texas makes historic investments in public education, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that taxpayer dollars directly reach students, classrooms, and teachers."
Abbott asked Huffines to select up to four independent school districts representing different sizes and geographic areas for review.
The investigations are intended to determine whether public funds are being used for their lawful and intended purposes, including whether spending is being directed toward students and teachers rather than what Abbott characterized as "administrative bloat" and noninstructional bureaucracy.
Abbott requested that the Comptroller provide final reports on the district reviews by December 31, 2026.
The findings could then be used to determine whether additional action is needed and potentially inform education reforms considered by the Texas Legislature during its 90th session.
Abbott said the goal is to ensure Texas' growing public education investment is being used to support students and teachers while improving the state's overall educational performance.
