The Bureau of Land Management leases 25 parcels covering more than 20,000 acres in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, generating nearly $139 million in total receipts as demand for domestic oil and gas development remains strong.
The Bureau of Land Management leased 25 parcels totaling 20,334 acres in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas for $139,021,741 in total receipts.
Revenue from the lease bonus bids and rentals will be distributed between the federal government and the states where the parcels are located.
The latest sale continues a strong year for oil and gas leasing in New Mexico. A record sale in May generated more than $4 billion in New Mexico and Texas, while New Mexico lease sales have generated more than $4.4 billion so far this year.
The latest sale was conducted under the Working Families Tax Cut Act, which reset the minimum royalty rate for new federal onshore oil and gas production to 12.5%, down from the 16.67% rate established under the Inflation Reduction Act.
The Bureau of Land Management said the lower royalty rate reduces the cost of developing oil and gas resources on public lands, potentially encouraging additional leasing and drilling activity.
The BLM said oil and gas leasing supports domestic energy production and contributes to U.S. energy and economic security.
Leasing is the first step in developing federal oil and gas resources. Any development must comply with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and other applical laws. The BLM said the leasing program is intended to help meet domestic energy needs while supporting the United States' position as a global energy producer.
