Houston Fifth Ward Apartment Faces Days-Long Power Outage

Approximately half of the Rose Plaza Apartment Complex in Houston's Fifth Ward remains without electricity after a days-long outage, prompting Rep. Christian Menefee (D) and community leaders to demand action as residents endure the summer heat.

How long have residents been without power?

Families at the Rose Plaza Apartment Complex have gone days without electricity, leaving approximately half of the complex without power even after electricity was restored to some units.

Rep. Menefee said the situation was particularly dangerous for seniors, children, and residents with health conditions who are without air conditioning and other necessities during the Houston summer.

Rep. Christian Menefee: "What's happening at Rose Plaza is completely unacceptable. Families should not be left sitting in the Texas heat for days waiting for their power to come back on."

What help is available to residents?

Information provided to Menefee's office indicates the outage does not appear to be connected to CenterPoint Energy equipment. CenterPoint technicians visited the property last week to assess the situation, but the remaining electrical problems appear to be located on the property owner's side.

The crew is working to restore electricity to the remaining buildings, but there is currently no estimated timeline for full restoration.

President of the 5th Ward Civic Club Sandra Edwards: "These are families, seniors, and children who have been without power, and they need help now. Rose Plaza has a responsibility to the people who call this place home. They need to make this right."

Menefee's office said its team is working with residents to connect them with assistance and resources.

The American Red Cross and United Way are also providing relief, including bottled water and food. Assistance is available for families who lost groceries during the prolonged outage as well.
