Texas Delegation Unites to Honor ‘Texas Trailblazer Kay Granger

This week, Texas Representatives Craig Goldman (R-TX) and Marc Veasey (D-TX) introduced a bill to honor former Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), who passed away earlier this month at age 83.

The Kay Granger Memorial Resolution would honor the congresswoman and former mayor of Fort Worth for what many members describe as a remarkable life and career. It would also formally recognize her leadership and service to Fort Worth, Texas and the United States. The entire Texas delegation of the United States House of Representatives co-sponsored the resolution, along with several other members of Congress.

"Kay Granger was truly a Texas legend,” Rep. Goldman said. “She was incredibly well respected by her colleagues and our nation’s leaders.”

Rep. Granger served the city of Fort Worth at the local, state and national level for over three decades. She also became the first woman elected mayor of Fort Worth, the first Republican woman from Texas to be appointed to the House of Representatives and the first woman to chair both the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee and House Appropriations Committee.

“She worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those she represented and did a tremendous job helping grow Fort Worth into the city it is today," Rep. Goldman said.

Rep. Veasey said Rep. Granger, who was also referred to by many as a “Texas Trailblazer,” was a pivotal voice for women in her community and politics as a whole.

"Congresswoman Kay Granger was a trailblazer for Texas and for women in public service,” Rep. Veasey said.

Although the two served in different parties, Rep. Veasey said he still admired her dedication to her constituents and the people of Texas.

"Kay was a fierce advocate for Fort Worth,” Rep. Veasey said. “Though we sat on different sides of the aisle, Kay and I shared a commitment to always place our community first."
