Greg Abbott Announces $1.7 Million in Veterans Grants for West Texas

Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced $1.7 million in Funds for Veterans' Assistance grants for six organizations serving veterans across West Texas.

Administered by the Texas Veterans Commission, the grants are expected to provide services to approximately 1,800 local veterans.

West Texas veterans receive new funding

The grants were announced as part of the Texas Veterans Commission's Grants Across Texas Tour and will support services ranging from transportation and housing to counseling and family assistance.

Gov. Abbott said Texas remains committed to supporting veterans and their families.

Gov. Greg Abbott: "These Fund for Veterans' Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation's military access to crucial services they need to thrive across West Texas."

Six organizations receive grants

The funding will support several programs across West Texas:

City of El Paso: $140,000 for transportation services.
El Paso County: $285,000 for financial assistance and $400,000 for Veterans Treatment Court.
Jeff Davis County: $200,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes.
Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission: $275,000 for Housing for Texas Heros.
Project Amistad: $200,000 for clinical counseling.
YWCA El Paso del Norte Region: $200,000 for family and child support services.

Grants address a range of veteran needs

TVC Director of Veteran Services and Army veteran Chip Osborne thanked the organizations receiving funding for supporting veterans in their communities. The grants address needs including emergency financial assistance, transportation, housing, legal services, counseling, and family support.

Osborne said El Paso and West Texas have a strong military community and are home to many veterans.

Texas awards more than $40 million statewide

In May, TVC Commissioners approved 190 grants totaling more than $40.8 million for 160 organizations across Texas.

Those grants are expected to provide direct services to more than 125,600 veterans, dependents, and surviving spouses during the 2026-2027 grant cycle.

Since 2009, more than $400 million has been awarded through 1,790 Funds for Veterans' Assistance grants.
