Republicans Anticipate ‘Mainstream vs. Extreme’ Midterm Election

Night one of the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) first-ever midterm convention kicked off yesterday with some speakers highlighting the party’s campaign goals, and others warning of what their colleagues across the aisle are planning.

Representative Brandon Gill (R-TX) was among the handful of federal officials and Republican lawmakers to take the stage. He, among others, underscored what’s at stake this election cycle – especially in a battleground state like Texas.

“This election is very clear,” Rep. Gill said. “It's the mainstream versus the extreme, because there's another political movement in our country right now that doesn't believe that America is or ever was great.”

The Socialist Wave

The rise of democratic socialism has taken the Democratic Party by storm in recent months. From New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s affordability-focused agenda to progressive candidates like Abdul El-Sayed (D-MI) unseating incumbents in Democratic primaries, the movement has Republicans like Rep. Gill raising concerns.

"Every party has their crazies,” Rep. Gill said. “The difference is the Democratic Party is nominating theirs for Congress."

Rep. Gill was far from the only speaker to denounce socialism as a “threat” to democracy. Democratic Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) made a surprise video appearance calling himself a “common-sense Democrat” who disapproves of the party’s current progressive shift.

"I'm always going to stand with America,” Sen. Fetterman said. “I'm always going to reject the extremes in socialism and that anti-American way of life."

Republicans Warn of ‘Woke Insanity’

Rep. Gill called out other progressive voices in Congress like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who Sen. Fetterman and Republicans argue are fueling the political movement.

“Here in Texas, we have James, ‘God is non-binary,’ ‘There are six genders,’ ‘We need to dismantle capitalism,’ Talarico,” Rep. Gill said, referring to Senate Candidate James Talarico (D-TX), who has called himself a “proud capitalist.”

Rep. Gill warned the party’s “woke insanity” took shape under President Joe Biden’s administration. He argued Biden and Democrats’ progressive policies hurt American consumers, despite the looming economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Inflation hit 9%, and we had a government that cared more about the color of your skin than the content of your character,” Rep. Gill said.

Unlike Democrats, Rep. Gill said Republicans will lead with “mainstream values.”

“In the face of absolutely unhinged Democrat opposition, Republicans put more money in the pockets of hundreds of millions of Americans under President Trump,” he said.
