Republican Lawmakers Push Resolution Denouncing Sharia Law

Representative Keith Self (R-TX) joined his Congressional colleagues in returning to Capitol Hill last week, introducing a resolution to denounce Sharia Law.

Rep. Self’s resolution would reaffirm the Constitution as the “supreme law of the land” while ensuring that no other laws or political systems can supersede it.

“We cannot allow Sharia law or any competing legal framework to undermine the liberties generations of Americans have fought and died to protect,” Rep. Self said.

This resolution comes just after President Donald Trump raised concerns about Sharia Law’s growing popularity in the United States. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) is pushing a similar message after an Islamic development center was set to be built near a military base in Texas.

With the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, other Republican lawmakers, like Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), argue the only way to prevent another terrorist attack is to stop the spread of Sharia Law.

“We cannot have Sharia law take a foothold in our state,” Rep. Donalds said during a town hall last week. “Absolutely not. Absolutely not.”

This renewed push to denounce Sharia Law is also fueled by the victory of U.S. Senate Candidate Abdul El Sayed (D-MI). After winning his primary earlier this month, a wave of Islamophobia online surged against El Sayed and Muslim Americans as a demographic, despite not all Muslim Americans subscribing to Sharia Law.

Yet, lawmakers, like Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX), are continuing to back Rep. Self’s resolution for the sake of protecting democracy from the “threat” of Islam’s “political agenda.”

“We cannot stand by and watch while foreign ideologies threaten American democracy, as we are seeing on Ali Akbar Court in Irving, Texas, and in ‘Muslim-only’ communities across the country,” Rep. Weber said.

Rep. Weber stressed that this resolution is one way Congress can reaffirm the Constitution.

“Congress must make it clear that Americans will remain safe, free and governed by the Constitution and the laws and values that made this nation great,” he said.
