Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott Sharpen Attacks on Democrats at RNC Convention

The second day of the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) midterm convention came and went with a few speakers sharing similar messages with the crowd of supporters.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) took the stage to sound off on democratic socialism and Sharia Law – two issues not foreign to either lawmaker.

Like Representative Brandon Gill (R-TX), Sen. Cruz warned of the Democratic Party's progressive shift in recent months. But, unlike other Republicans, Sen. Cruz stressed that not every Democrat in Congress supports the political movement.

“They are all afraid of these radicals,” Sen. Cruz said. “Because that’s where the money and the energy and the young people are in the Democrat Party.”

Sen. Cruz called out several Democratic politicians, including New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (NY), Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (MI) and Texas’ own James Talarico.

During the convention broadcast, an audience member could be heard shouting, “He should be shot,” after Sen. Cruz mentioned each name.

Although it was unclear whether Cruz heard the shouts, which came on the one-year anniversary of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination, he continued with his speech, warning of what he called a new “alliance.”

“We are witnessing a new and dangerous red-green alliance, communists and Islamists coming together and sweeping over the Democratic Party,” Sen. Cruz said.

Sen. Cruz argued that democratic socialism, or as he and other Republicans liken to communism, and Sharia Law are both producing “murder and oppression” across the country.

“We need to stand together and stop it now,” Sen. Cruz said.

Gov. Abbott shared similar concerns over Sharia Law, highlighting his efforts to designate the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist organizations.

“And we are not waiting on Washington, D.C.,” Gov. Abbott said to the crowd. “We will fully ban Sharia law in Texas.”

Both Sen. Cruz and Gov. Abbott said Republicans are pushing “common sense” policies, while Democrats are growing more radical.

“This election is a choice,” Gov. Abbott said. “It’s a choice between common sense and crazy. Yes, common sense always wins.”
