16.7% of Texas Voters are Unaffiliated and Undecided Ahead of November

One in six Texas voters is both unaffiliated with a political party and undecided about the November election, according to a new statewide poll that also finds broad voter support for candidates focused on education, affordability, and infrastructure.

The Texas 2036 poll, conducted August 22-26 by Baselice & Associates, found that 16.7% of voters fall into the organization's "Unaffiliated and Undecided" category. Among those voters, 38% expect to support a mix of candidates from different parties, while 24% remain unsure how they will vote—only about one in seven currently plans to vote exclusively for one party.

Across the broader electorate, about half of voters said they plan to vote exclusively for one party, including 26% who intend to vote only for Republicans and 24% who intend to vote only for Democrats.

The poll also found substantial agreement around several issues. The largest share of voters, 84.8%, said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate committed to ensuring Texas students can read and do math at grade level.

Reducing health care prices followed at 83.2%, while 82.6% said they would be more likely to support a candidate focused on preparing high school students for college or a career.

Other positions drawing more than 80% support included reducing residential electricity bills at 81.8% and building needed water infrastructure at 81.4%. Reducing homeowners' insurance costs drew 79%.

Support was lower for addressing border security, at 61,5%, and evaluating the growth of data centers, at 50.5%.

Among unaffiliated and undecided voters, priorities were broadly similar to those of the overall electorate, with education outcomes and affordability among the leading concerns. The group showed somewhat higher support for making childcare more parent-friendly and increasing public education funding.

The poll surveyed 1,001 registered Texas voters after weighting, with a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points.
