The Texas Attorney General's Cold Case Unit says DNA testing has identified recently recovered human remains as those of Jason Landry, a Texas State University student who disappeared nearly six years ago.
Jason Landry, 21, disappeared on Dec. 13, 2020, while driving from San Marcos to his family home in Missouri City. His crashed and abandoned vehicle was found shortly after midnight on Salt Flat Road in Cadwell County near Luling.
Clothing and other personal belongings were discovered around the crash site, but Landry was not found despite extensive searches involving law enforcement, search teams, and volunteers.
On Sept. 8, 2026, a resident discovered human remains east of Salt Flat Road between Soda Springs and Biggs Road. The University of North Texas Center for Human Identification conducted DNA testing that confirmed the remains belonged to Landry.

The remains do not provide additional information about the cause or manner of death. Investigators have also found no indication of foul play.
The OAG Cold Case Unit repeatedly conducted ground and aerial searches, reviewed new leads, and reexamined the case over the years. The effort involved the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Texas Search and Rescue.
Citizen volunteers also spent substantial time and personal resources searching for Landry.
Attorney General Ken Paxton said the identification marks a critical moment for the Landry family after nearly six years of uncertainty.
AG Ken Paxton: "The Landry family has suffered an unimaginable tragedy, and they will remain in our prayers, especially during this incredibly difficult time."
The Landry family has been notified, and authorities are asking for privacy as the family processes the identification. The OAG said additional information will be released as appropriate.
