Gina Hinojosa Challenges Abbott to Debate in Texas Governor's Race

Democratic Texas gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa challenged Republican Governor Greg Abbott to debate her outside the Governor's Mansion in Austin on October 15, calling on the incumbent to address voters' concerns about affordability and public education.

Hinojosa made the challenge during a recent press conference in San Antonio, saying she would travel to Austin to debate Abbott at 10 a.m. She argued that Texans deserve to compare her policy proposals with the governor's record after nearly 12 years in office.

"Today, here in San Antonio, I am calling on Greg Abbott to meet me at his Governor's Mansion," said Hinojosa. "I will come to him to debate. He needs to stop hiding from the voters. The people of Texas deserve to hear my plan for Texas versus his record for Texas."

Hinojosa said her campaign prioritizes supporting public schools and reducing financial pressures on Texas households.

"My plan for Texas is to secure the American Dream," she said, arguing that economic opportunity has become harder to achieve during Abbott's tenure.

The challenge comes amid renewed debate over whether the candidates will participate in a televised gubernatorial debate. Hinojosa previously accepted an invitation for an October 15 debate in Fort Worth hosted by NBCUniversal's Texas television stations and Hearst Newspapers, but Abbott's campaign had not publicly accepted the invitation.

Campaign finance reports have also drawn attention to the race. Abbott has spent approximately $141.3 million since the beginning of the year through the latest reporting period, while Hinojosa spent about $12.1 million from July through September 24.

Recent polling has shown a close contest. A New York Times/Siena survey conducted September 21-30 found Hinojosa at 49% and Abbott at 46% among likely voters, while a Fox News poll conducted September 24-28 showed Abbott ahead, 52% to 47%.
