Matthew McConaughey Urges Americans to 'Elect Independence' in November

The political tides are shifting, and Matthew McConaughey is doing his part to ensure Americans consider voting outside of the “two-arty system.”

In a video posted on social media, McConaughey urges Americans to question the idea that voting for a third-party candidate is a “wasted” vote.

“So they’ve been telling us for years that an Independent vote is a wasted vote. Well, a great question for our times is, how’s that unwasted vote been working out for you?” he asks.

In the video, McConaughey shares his frustration with what the “two-party system” has done so far, and polling indicates that McConaughey is not alone in feeling this frustration.

In a Gallup poll released October 2025, 62% of Americans shared that they want a third party to challenge Republicans and Democrats. The same poll also showed that 55% of Americans are “somewhat likely” to vote for a third-party candidate. 15% are “very likely” to do so.

While the actor did not formally endorse any specific candidate or party, he did mention that “reality has changed,” which should yield different political results.

“This summer, former Senator Manchin and his daughter, Heather, launched the Independent leadership council, built to recruit, fund, and back true Independent candidates for Congress. Not 50 of them, a handful because a handful is all the math truly requires,” McConaughey explains in the video.

In November, McConaughey says that he wants Americans to understand the power behind voting outside of the “two-party system,” commenting, “I understand if the goal is to change how both parties behave, if the goal is to bring the back to the middle where most American values live, then electing independence is a mechanism to make that happen.”

The Oscar winning actor has shared his political thoughts in recent years, going so far as sharing that he has considered running for Texas governor.
