Gina Hinojosa
At a rally in San Antonio, Texas, gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa (D-TX) announced she’s pursuing legal action against Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) over his refusal to release unredacted communications with billionaire Elon Musk.
Hinojosa told the crowd that she filed a lawsuit against Gov. Abbott to force the release of emails between him and billionaire Elon Musk, just 15 days until Texans head to the polls and cast their ballots.
"I filed a lawsuit against Greg Abbott to release the emails between him and Elon Musk,” Hinojosa said. “Hundreds of pages of redacted emails that Greg Abbott will not release because he claims they are—quote—intimate and embarrassing.”
The focus on billionaires is a common theme across Democratic campaigns both state and national. Meanwhile, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are already planning to call Musk to testify on the impacts of his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in Washington.
During the rally, Hinojosa pointed to a reported contract awarding Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet company, $110 million in broadband funding. She alleges Abbott’s office intervened to secure upfront payment rather than the standard initial 10%, drawing scrutiny from lawmakers and prompting an audit of the Texas Broadband Development Office.
“We know that Greg Abbott intervened to divert the $100 million broadband contract this summer to Elon Musk,” she said. “Even Republicans at the legislature said, ‘This is too much. This stinks.’”
Hinojosa said this lawsuit is not about embarrassing Abbott, but holding him accountable.
“I don’t think there is a torrid love affair between Greg Abbott and Elon Musk,” Hinojosa said. “What this is about is the fact that Elon Musk gave Greg Abbott half a million dollars for his campaign and then received $1.7 billion in property tax breaks.”
With just a few weeks left before Election Day, Hinojosa said Texans deserve transparency about the relationship between their governor and one of his biggest donors.
“He is selling off Texas for parts to his biggest donor because Greg Abbott is the most corrupt governor in Texas history,” she said.
