Trump Revives GOP Attacks on James Talarico in Third Texas Rally

President Donald Trump returned to Texas for back-to-back rallies this week, reviving a handful of attacks against Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico (D-TX).

As Republicans look to maintain their Congressional majority after the midterm elections, Trump returned to Texas for a rally in Corpus Christi, Texas. Although Texas has not had a Democratic senator for 38 years, the neck-and-neck polling between Talarico and opponent Ken Paxton (R-TX) has made this toss-up race a major source of anxiety for Republicans.

This is the third time Trump has visited Texas this month to campaign for Paxton and other Republican candidates on Texas’ ballot.

“No politician in history has been more obsessed with turning your young boys and girls transgender,” Trump said of “Talafreako,” a name he and many Republicans have continued to use in reference to Talarico.

This message on transgender youth is one Republicans have continued to push on many Democratic candidates, but especially on Talarico. Vice President JD Vance remarked at a rally earlier this month that he “wouldn’t want to see” Talarico’s search history.

Trump continued to dig up the handful of attacks Republicans have been using on Talarico, including when he was absent from the campaign trail this month recovering from the flu.

“He disappeared for 12 to 14 days. It's actually probably 14 if you really look at it, missing in action,” Trump said, adding that he thinks Talarico “has a mental illness.”

This rumor stems from right-wing influencer Nick Sortor who falsely claimed Talarico was in a mental health facility in Ohio. The Lindner Center of Hope later came out and debunked this claim. Talarico said his Type-1 diabetes makes it more difficult for him to recover from the flu.

Trump also resurfaced the claim that Talarico is a vegan. Republicans have continued to add “Tofu Talarico” to their list of nicknames for the congressional candidate, and Trump repeated the nickname.

“I happen to think he was food poisoned by meat because he can't stand it,” Trump said to the crowd. “You ever see him go to a barbecue and he's trying to show – ‘I love the meat; oh, I love it, look.’ And then you see him, where is he? He's behind the tent puking.”

Talarico has denied his alleged veganism on multiple occasions.
