Sometimes the best protection you have from evil is yourself.
Texas believes this wholeheartedly and that is why they have implemented what is known as the "campus carry law."
The law went into effect on Monday and it permits those over 21 years old with a concealed handgun license to take their handgun onto public university campuses.
Under the law, handguns will also be allowed in classrooms, dorms and other campus buildings. The specifics will vary from school to school and the firearms must be kept holstered and concealed.
Texas is the eighth state in the country to permit guns on campuses as reported by Reuters.
When Abbott signed the bill into law last year he said:
By signing these bills into law, Texans can be assured that their Second Amendment rights will be stronger and more secure than ever before.
The implementation of the law coincides with the 50th anniversary of the mass shooting at the University of Texas in Austin. That shooting left 14 people dead and over 30 wounded.
