Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent out an email on Sunday making clear what his plans are for the upcoming legislative session. He said Texas is going to ban sanctuary city policies in the state.
Abbott stated:
Texas is going to BAN sanctuary city policies during our upcoming legislative session.
He also stated:
Nearly 20,000 illegal immigrants with 64,197 criminal offenses -- including 208 murders and 8,234 violent convictions -- have allowed to simply walk back into American society.
Abbott went on to explain he has heard too many stories like Kathryn Steinle who was gunned down by an illegal immigrant in San Francisco last year in front of her dad. Apparently her killer had already been deported five times.
Included in the email was an outline of his plans to ban sanctuary cities. It included:
- Outlaw any policy or action that promotes sanctuary to people in this state illegally;
- Make it illegal for a Sheriff’s Department to refuse to honor a federal immigration detainer request;
- Ensure that localities are fully financially responsible for the actions of any illegal immigrants who are released because the county’s sheriff failed to honor an ICE detainer request.
The legislative session in Texas is scheduled to start in January.
