Rep. Castro eyes coveted Foreign Affairs Committee chairmanship

As the infighting within the Democratic Party continues on whether to continue pushing a Democratic Socialist agenda, the growing divide between the Progressive and the liberal, more moderate factions of the party will hit an apex when House leadership and committee positions are voted on later this month.

Besides voting on reelecting, or not, Speaker Nancy Pelosi to another term at the helm of the party, House Democrats will vote on who will chair several important committees, like the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Like most races, there is already a clear frontrunner, and his name is Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX).

Rep. Castro is a true Progressive candidate and considering that he has already received the support of his influential twin brother, former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, and the support of 47 groups that play in the foreign affairs sandbox, Castro is all but a shoo-in to win the committee’s chairmanship.

Reps. Gregory Meeks (D-NY and Brad Sherman (D-CA), both considered moderates, may not stand a chance against Castro, but the elections in the House will all come down on whether Democrats will support the growing Democratic Socialist agenda being driving by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Squad.”

“After four years of Trump attacking allies and ignoring global challenges, it’s time for a new approach to diplomacy,” stated Julian Castro. @JoaquinCastrotx is running for Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee to end to endless wars and promote democracy through cooperation.”

But just because Big Brother (we think Julian was born first) and foreign policy groups are backing his candidacy, it doesn’t mean that he is the right man for the job. Actually, Castro’s foreign policy bona fides were solidified over that past for years, as the chairman of the Democrat-only Hispanic Caucus took on the Trump administration, in particular the Department of Homeland Security, over the policies and treatment of illegal aliens that were detained along the border with Mexico.

Even though Castro is a Progressive, he has not tried to shake things up or challenge Speaker Pelosi in any way, so the probability that he will receive support from Speaker Pelosi is almost guaranteed.
