Chip Roy Backs DeSantis Presidential Run

Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) has endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R). Roy appeared with DeSantis at a Texas Town Hall, sharing his thoughts for formally endorsing the presidential hopeful.

Back in March, the Texas lawmaker preemptively endorsed DeSantis. In an email to supporters, Roy expressed that "the next President of the United States must be a vibrant and energetic leader with the faith, vision, and courage to chart a new course."

"America needs a leader who will truly defend her and empower the people against the destructive force of unrestrained government and corporate excess, profligate spending, and woke cultural indoctrination," Roy added. Since then, as the Republican primary list of candidates continues to grow, Roy had not commented on his endorsement since DeSantis announced his intention to run.

Taking the stage in support of Governor DeSantis, Roy praised the Governor for his efforts in Florida, mentioning that they have also helped Texas.

"Governor DeSantis stands as someone willing to fight for you... you want someone who will stand up and defend us, and that man, in my opinion, is Governor Ron DeSantis," Roy said before introducing the Governor.

"Governor DeSantis has proven that he's willing to stand up and fight," Roy continued, detailing that the Governor has enacted several measures in order to crack down on illegal immigration, adding that "the Governor is standing up and fighting for us in Texas."

In the same Texas Town Hall, Governor Ron DeSantis discussed that he would end birthright citizenship, which is a measure that President Donald Trump (R) has also expressed support for. President Trump is still positioned as the frontrunner in the race, but DeSantis is slowly picking up speed in support and endorsements.

The primary debates are scheduled to begin in August, and there are still other Republican lawmakers that are rumored to be throwing their hat in the race.
