Texas Governor Greg Abbott marked a major expansion of the state's energy capacity with the groundbreaking of two new power plants in Southeast Texas, projects expected to significantly boost the electricity supply in the region.
The new facilities – Entergy's Legend and Lone Star power stations – are being developed by Entergy and will collectively add approximately 1,200 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity, enough to power more than 300,000 homes.
"No state provides more power generation than the great State of Texas," said Gov. Abbott during the ceremony. "Today, we are expanding that leadership by breaking ground on two new massive power generation stations."
The governor highlighted Texas' dominant position in U.S. energy production, noting the state leads in oil and gas, wind generation, utility-scale solar, and battery storage. He emphasized that continued investment in infrastructure is essential to meeting the demands of a rapidly growing population and economy.
Entergy leadership echoed that message, pointing to increasing energy demand across Southeast Texas.
"Legend and Lone Star demonstrate how we're investing today's needs while supporting the region's long-term future," said Entergy Chair and CEO Drew Marsh.
Entergy Texas CEO Eliecer Viamontes added that the projects will help ensure reliability while supporting job creation and economic development in the region.
"More families, businesses and industries are choosing Southeast Texas, and they are counting on power they can depend on every day," he said.
The new plants come as Texas continues to add significant capacity to its grid, with thousands of megawatts brought online in recent years to keep pace with population growth, industrial expansion, and rising electricity demand.
State leaders say projects like Legend and Lone Star stations are critical to maintaining Texas's position as the nation's energy leader while ensuring long-term reliability and affordability for residents and businesses.
