Former first lady Rosalyn Carter has passed away at the age of 96. The first lady was married to the 39th president Jimmy Carter. Texas Representatives took to social media to react to the news of her death.
In a tweet, Representative Joaquin Castro (D) gave his condolences to the beloved activist who was nicknamed "steel magnolia".
"Rosalynn Carter was a champion for human rights at home and abroad who devoted her life to service. Her voice will be terribly missed, but her legacy will live on, especially for the millions who can get mental health care because of her work. May she rest in peace."
Representative Sylvia Garcia (D) celebrated the work Rosalyn Carter did to help those struggling with mental health.
"Rosalynn Carter was the quintessential First Lady who truly cared about people and service. She lived her life dedicated others, advocating for so many issues from mental health to housing. I was honored to have met her and send my prayers to President Carter and their family."
The former first lady was beloved by most Americans regardless of their political party. She was a champion and advocate for caregivers, urging U.S. administrations to develop positions dedicated to protecting caregivers.
In her last days, she entered into hospice care. Carter had recently celebrated a birthday and was stated to have enjoyed cupcakes and peanut butter ice cream. The activist will be remembered for many things from peanut farming with her husband to the several causes she continued to fight for. However, one thing that may stand out the most is her role as a family woman.
The humanitarian is survived by her husband, four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
