Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate find themselves at odds as Senator James Lankford (R-OK) has led negotiations with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on border security while at the same time, the House - including Representative Troy Nehls (R-TX), is attempting to impeach him.
Regardless of the ongoing negotiations, top House Republicans are calling for Secretary Mayorkas’ impeachment.
“DHS Secretary Mayorkas admitted that ‘above 85%’ of illegal aliens apprehended at the border are being released into the country. Where are they now? In your city? Community? State? Secretary Mayorkas has failed to secure our homeland. He should be impeached,” said Representative Troy Nehls.
Furthermore, Representative Wesley Hunt (R-TX) provided a bit of a satirical take on the border based on the movie “The Terminal” (2004) starring Tom Hanks.
“In a theatre near you: The Terminal, Directed by Joe Biden and starring Alejandro Mayorkas. Watch as thousands of illegal migrants discover what’s left of our nation’s airports all because the President and his henchman refuse to secure the American homeland. Discover TSA as they vigorously screen American citizens while allowing the undocumented to board your flight. The Terminal,” said Rep. Hunt.
Additionally, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said that Secretary Mayorkas is “a liar” and demanded his impeachment.
“Secretary Mayorkas claimed over 20 times that the border is either closed or secure. Mayorkas is a liar. The border isn’t just wide open, he’s inviting the world inside. Mayorkas ignores our laws and is violating the Constitution he’s sworn to protect. We must #ImpeachMayorkas!” said Rep. Taylor Greene.
Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) – a known member of former President Donald Trump’s shortlist for Vice President kept it short and sweet.
“We must impeach Alejandro Mayorkas,” said Rep. Donalds.
However, in the upper chamber, Senator Lankford said that the effort is futile as Mayorkas is simply fulfilling the wishes of President Joe Biden (D). he believes that replacing him wouldn’t accomplish anything.
“Mayorkas is gearing up President Biden’s policies — that’s what a secretary is going to do,” Lankford told reporters at the Capitol, according to PBS. “So you can swap secretaries, the policies are going to be exactly the same.”
Therefore, assuming both House Republicans and Sen. Lankford’s assertions are right at the same time, the Republican Conference in both chambers must figure out what is more important: principle or policy.
