Rep. Hunt Rebuts Comments Made by MSNBC's Joy Reid After Trump's Substantial Iowa Win

Representative Wesley Hunt (R-TX) appeared on Fox News's “The Ingraham Angle” with Laura Ingram to discuss diversity within the Republican Party.

This discussion was sparked by recent comments made by MSNBC’s Joy Reid in which she said that Trump’s substantial victory in Iowa was simply due to white evangelicals in the state.

Rep. Hunt called the characterization by Reid “intellectually lazy.”

“That is absolutely intellectually lazy. And as someone that is a direct descendant of [slavery], my great-great-grandfather was born on a plantation and here I am, standing before you today, in Iowa, caucusing for President Trump, and you’re going to try to call me a racist?” said Rep. Hunt.

He continued, “And by the way, that was a majority white crowd, but I couldn’t really care less of what they look like. We shared American ideals. We want our country back. We want a secure border. We want our economy back. We want to be able to live without hyper-inflation. That is it. And those issues have no race, religion, color or creed. And whenever you dog whistle in that way, it is assumed that every Republican is racist.”

Furthermore, the Texas congressman was incredibly confident that his constituents would continue to vote for him no matter his race.

“What do you want to say to somebody like me that will not only get elected this year – but as long as I want to run on this seat, I know I going to have the support of the people of District 38 and they don’t care how I look,” Hunt said.

In late December the Colorado Supreme Court as well as the Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows attempted to use the 14th Amendment as reasoning to remove Trump from the state’s primary ballot in their respective states.

Rep. Hunt addressed the national outcry with a social media post, accusing Democrats of “destroying democracy.”

“Since everyone is talking about the civil war, let’s talk about Maine… The most recent example of Democrats acting to remove a candidate for President from the ballot. The last time this happened? The civil war. The last party who did it? The Democrats. The party doing it again? The Democrats. Donald J. Trump is the biggest threat to the matrix in American history, and that’s why they’ll do whatever it takes to stop him. Democrats destroying democracy to protect it. The jokes write themselves,” said Rep. Hunt.

Rep. Hunt endorsed President Trump for the 2024 cycle early on after receiving an endorsement for his own campaign in 2020. He lost by 3 points to the District 7 incumbent Representative Lizzie Pannill Fletcher (D-TX). Hunt ran again in 2020 in District 38 and defeated his opponent by nearly 28 points.
