In a recent interview with Texas Politics, Texas Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D) celebrated the Biden-Harris administration’s policies as she gave her thoughts on how President Joe Biden (D) should handle the State of the Union address.
“I'm going to tell the truth. Be transparent. Every good thing that has happened in this country over the last four years, three and a half, is because of the Biden-Harris administration. We literally were brought out of the pandemic by the commitment to saving the nation. The PPPs, the vaccines and testing, the Child Tax Credit, temporary child tax credit, they literally saved families,” said Rep. Jackson Lee.
The Texas congresswoman talked about all the legislation that many in the Democratic party pushed for, including some bipartisan bills as well.
“And then we came out of that and passed what no one thought we could pass in a bipartisan $1 trillion infrastructure bill that has put money in states, red states. Put people to work. If you go anywhere near a union, they're shouting for joy because, not only are they working, but they're able to bring in apprentices,” said Jackson Lee.
The Texas politician discussed the value of having the “American people” captured while the president spoke.
“Tell the truth, and then I believe he should also focus on social justice,” said Jackson Lee.
“There is a body of people who need criminal justice reform. There's a body of people who need to be protected from racism and discrimination. And there is a body of people who needs the federal government to put a pathway for access to wealth or access to capital and to make a difference,” continued Jackson Lee.
The Texas congresswoman discussed the funding for Ukraine that has drawn some criticism from some GOP members.
“So transparency, telling the truth, and then he's got to tell the truth about me. Pray that it's not a selfish act of giving away money. It actually is a true fight for democracy, which is going to be at our front door. And if he has to give an extra PS, they buy the weapons from us,” said Jackson Lee.
The congresswoman continued, “So the money goes to Ukraine, and they buy the money. They buy the weapons from us. This is a true sense of partnership, fighting for democracy, losing young lives, young soldiers on the frontlines, and Ukraine on the fight against Russia. Yes, a fight against Russia and standing up for democracy around the world.”
Jackson Lee, however, made sure to clarify that she did not think Ukraine had any underhanded plans to misuse the money.
“I believe that the federal government has every right to, in essence, follow the money and determine accuracy. I have no reason to charge Ukraine, anything other than shedding their blood, fleeing or proceeding, and they need the resources to buy the weapons to stay on the front line,” said Jackson Lee.
The representative stated her possible openness to the GOP-backed “Remain in Mexico” policy.
“For 29 years, I was the ranking member on the immigration subcommittee in judiciary. I remain on it. I was the ranking member of the audit committee in combat. So my view is there are a lot of suggestions on the table. Remaining Mexico is a position that we've held. Let me see whether it'll work, and working with the greatest consensus of our caucus, and let's move forward,” concluded Jackson Lee.
