Rep. Chip Roy
The United Nations Security Council has called on an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Gaza, also calling on the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages. The United States did not vote on the resolution, choosing instead to abstain from voting. This has not only drawn criticism from Israel's government, but U.S. lawmakers are also weighing in. Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) has since unloaded on the UN resolution, calling it "unconscionable."
U.M. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commented on social media, saying that "this resolution must be implemented" and that "failure would be unforgivable."
The decision to abstain from voting has drawn criticism from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, arguing that "the US has backed down from its consistent stance in the Security Council since the beginning of the war."
