De La Cruz Votes for the SAVE Act, but Bill Awaits Certain Doom

Representative Monica De La Cruz (R-TX) released a statement following the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in the House. This bill includes provisions to ensure that only United States citizens – not illegal immigrants – can vote in U.S. elections by requiring proof of citizenship in order to vote in federal elections.

In June, the New York Post reported that 49 states in the Union are actively providing voter registration forms without the necessary proof of citizenship.

Rep. De La Cruz says the SAVE Act would protect the fundamental right to vote for U.S. citizens.

“The path to citizenship is not easy, but the rewards are great. Among them is the fundamental right to vote. We must preserve this right and ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote," said Rep. De La Cruz. “While citizenship is already a requirement to vote, it is not always easy to prove, thus requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register allows for fair and just elections, protecting one of the most fundamental rights of our country.”

The Texas congresswoman continued, “This bill ensures the integrity of our elections by closing loopholes allowing non-citizens to vote. More than 10 million illegal immigrants entered the country under the Biden Administration, none of whom have the right to vote but can register and vote in certain states. The SAVE Act will restore voters’ confidence in the electoral system.”

However, the Biden administration claims that this bill would not accomplish its intended goal of disallowing noncitizens from voting in federal elections but would only “make it much harder for all eligible Americans to register to vote” and “increase the risk that eligible voters are purged from voter rolls.”

The bill is sponsored by Representative Chip Roy (R-TX). After President Biden released a statement condemning the bill, Rep. Roy said it was an honor to be called out by the Biden White House.

“Well, I'm honored. I'm honored to be in the crosshairs of the White House, a White House which is very clearly in opposition to the well-being of most Americans, as evidenced by their open borders and the death of Laken Riley and a bunch of Texans. This administration is not interested in safeguarding the American people's right to vote. They're not interested in safeguarding anything about our safety and well-being. This is about political power, nothing more, nothing less. That's what it's about for them,” said Rep. Roy.

The bill would a multitude of Democrats to cross party lines to pass in the Senate. President Biden said he would veto the measure anyway.

This is a developing story.
