Cruz, Rubio Discuss Democratic 'Inter-Party Coup' to Replace Biden

President Joe Biden's reelection campaign has faced increased pressure to withdraw from Democratic Party insiders concerned about his health and well-being. But who would replace him? Vice President Kamala Harris would be considered a logical choice, but rumors of former First Lady Michelle Obama being the replacement have spread. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) speculated on this unprecedented turn of events with Fox News's Sean Hannity at the Republican National Convention's final night.

"I think it is a coin flip now between Michelle Obama and Kamala. Look, if I were a Democrat, I want Michelle Obama. As a Republican, she is by far the serious nominee. But it is interesting that Democrats are circling the wagons around Kamala. I think it is about 50/50 between the two of them," said Sen. Cruz.

Sen. Rubio did not lean very strongly into either of the two women, instead pointing out the irony of Democrats acting undemocratically by replacing the elected Biden without input from voters despite claiming to defend democracy.

"She is [Biden's] Vice President. That makes you think she would be president, right? How do you move her out of the way? I do not have deep insight into the [Democratic National Committee], but how undemocratic. They like talking about democracy. This is basically an inter-party coup; they tell this guy, 'You have got to go; I do not care what the voters think. We are going to remove you and cut off your money.' I mean, I have never seen anything like it. It has no precedent in American politics," said Sen. Rubio.

Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) similarly pointed out the "hypocrisy" of Democrats seeking to replace Biden without consulting voters, which flies in the face of their claims that Donald Trump and Republicans are "a threat to democracy," further suggesting they do not wish for Kamala Harris to be the new nominee.

"They are saying [Republicans] are a threat to democracy, and yet here they are trying to topple their democratically elected or nominated candidate, Joe Biden, in any way or shape that they can, and then they will bypass the Vice President also. So that is what I am hearing is happening right now with the Democratic Party, the top donors, etcetera, how to get rid of Joe Biden but also how not to turn to Kamala Harris," said Rep. Gimenez.
