Rep. Chip Roy
Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R), who's campaigning to enlist support for his SAVE Act, is calling out Democratic leadership. As the state of Texas looks to ensure that its voter rolls are clear of non-citizens, Rep. Roy is accusing Democrats of being power hungry in blocking the effort.
The state of Alabama was slapped with a lawsuit last week. The Department of Justice is suing the state for allegedly violating federal law's prohibition on systematic efforts to remove voters within 90 days of an election. Alabama, much like other red states, has pursued efforts to make sure there are no non-citizens that have the ability to vote.
Last month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced that it had removed over one million ineligible voters from its rolls, which immediately drew criticism from Democrats.
During an interview with Fox News, Rep. Roy questioned why Democrats are pushing back against Republicans' efforts to ensure that there are no noncitizens on the voting rolls, noting that "the Attorney General of Texas, and our Secretary of State, are having to fight the federal government to get the information necessary to ensure that there aren't noncitizens on the voter rolls." "Why is the Department of Justice suing the state of Alabama to prevent Alabama from ensuring that noncitizens are not on the voter rolls?" he questioned.
For him, it comes down to Democrats wanting to have the "political power" to ensure that noncitizens vote and that there are criminals on the streets.
On social media, the Texas Republican reiterated his claim on Fox News, accusing Democrats of "trading sovereignty for more power."
According to data released this week, there are currently 425,431 convicted criminals and 222,141 with pending criminal charges in the United States. Of said criminals, 13,099 have been convicted of homicide, and 15,811 have been convicted of sexual assault.
