Texas at the Center of U.S. LNG Export Boom as 2025 Sets New Records

U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have surged to historic levels in 2025, solidifying the country’s role as the world’s top LNG supplier. From January through August, exports climbed 22% year-over-year, totaling 69 million metric tons, or 14.3 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

This growth is largely driven by expanding export capacity and increased global demand, particularly from Europe. The continent now accounts for approximately 75% of U.S. LNG exports through the first five months of 2025, reflecting a major shift in global energy flows as U.S. supplies continue to displace Russian natural gas.

Texas has played a pivotal role in this transformation. The state reached a new record for natural gas marketed production in March 2025, hitting 34.4 bcf/d. It also saw record LNG exports in February, with 8.9 bcf/d shipped, nearly three-quarters of which went to Europe.

Texas’ proximity to the Gulf Coast and robust infrastructure has enabled it to meet rising global demand swiftly.

At home, natural gas demand in Texas is also on the rise, averaging over 14 bcf/d from January to May. Industrial use, the largest demand segment, increased 3.3% year-over-year, while power generation consumption rose by 0.9%.

Since 2019, U.S. LNG exports have grown over 180%, and Texas alone has seen a 450% jump. This makes the LNG export sector the fastest-growing component of both U.S. and Texas natural gas markets.

With global LNG demand surging, despite slower imports from Asia, Texas remains central to meeting supply needs, including pipeline exports to Mexico and overseas shipments. The state’s natural gas output peaked at 14.2 bcf/d in February, reinforcing its importance in both North American and global energy systems.
