Texas Republicans Cheer 'Writing on the Wall' for BlackRock & DEI

2025 started with BlackRock Inc. announcing its departure from the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative (NZAMI), a coalition committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner. Much to the dismay of climate activists, Republicans comment that it's no surprise BlackRock would shift its focus, arguing that it finally saw the "Writing on the wall."

In a letter sent to their clients, BlackRock Inc. noted that their membership in NZAMI "caused confusion regarding BlackRock's practices and subjected us to legal inquiries from various public officials."

With the world's biggest asset managers pulling out of NZAMI, Republicans agree that it's no surprise.

Rep. Ronny Jackson

In an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, several members of congress weighed in on the issue, welcoming the exit but remaining wary of the move.

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R) commented that the exit is a sign of shifting alliances in the corporate world, but he remains wary about the move.

"Trump's worst enemies suddenly want to be his best friend. It's kinda comical," he said. "I think you gotta be careful because I think a lot of these people are still snakes. I don't trust them."

Rep. Brian Babin (R) also weighed in on BlackRock's departure, suggesting that legal pressure could've driven the asset managers to pull out of the initiative.

"I think there's already been a court ruling that their fiduciary responsibility is being violated by the adherence to these types of policies," he explained. "They have a fiduciary responsibility of investing their shareholders' money, and they're doing it for purposes of DEI rather than to make gains. They're trying to protect themselves from a lawsuit if you want to know the truth."

Rep. Pete Sessions (R) instead attributed the exit to BlackRock noticing a rejection of "woke" corporate culture.

"They can read the handwriting on the wall," the Texas congressman said. "The American people know that it is anticompetitive, it's anti-American, and it's simply giving in to a 'woke' culture that has lost its way."
