Governor Abbott Reinforces School Choice as Top Priority in Texas Legislature

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is doubling down on his push for school choice, calling it a transformative step for the state's education system. In a series of posts on his official X account, Abbott made clear that passing school choice is one of his top priorities this legislative session.

“I see our education landscape, and it is not where we deserve to be, where we should be,” Abbott stated. “Every place I look, a component of successful education is school choice.”

The Governor emphasized that empowering parents is at the heart of his agenda. Quoting the Most Reverend Edward J. Burns, Abbott shared: “Parents are the primary educators of their children and should enjoy true liberty in their choice of schools.”

“School choice empowers parents to make the best educational decisions for their kids,” Abbott continued. “Texas will empower parents this session. Texas must pass school choice this session to empower parents and help students succeed.”

Framing school choice to elevate Texas' standing in education nationwide, Abbott added, “As Governor, I want Texas to be #1 in every category—and that includes #1 in education. Passing school choice will help make that happen.”

Abbott also highlighted broad public support for school choice, pointing to polling data across various demographics. “Texans want school choice,” he wrote. “School choice is supported by overwhelming majorities of Hispanic Americans, Black Americans, & white Americans across the state. It doesn't matter what region you're in. School choice is popular in urban, suburban, & rural Texas!”

The Governor shared a personal moment that reinforced his message, posting about a meeting with two constituents.

“Greta & Miracle stopped by my office today. We discussed the impact school choice would have on countless Texas families. I agree with you, Greta—parents deserve a choice in their kids' education. Thanks for sharing your invaluable perspective on why we MUST pass school choice.”

As the legislative session continues, Gov. Abbott is making it clear that school choice isn’t just a policy goal, it’s a mission. With public support on his side and a strong message around parental empowerment, the Governor is rallying lawmakers to act.
