Governor Abbott announces $46.3 Million in Grants to Support Veterans

Governor Greg Abbott (R) and the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) have announced that more than $46.3 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants will be awarded to 175 organizations across Texas. These grants, approved by TVC Commissioners last week, are expected to assist over 40,000 veterans and their families throughout the state.

“Texas is forever indebted to the brave men and women who answered the call to serve in our nation's military,” said Governor Abbott. “Setting a new record with over $46.3 million in state grants, Texas will help thousands of veterans, and their families access vital support and resources needed to thrive in our great state.”

Texas, home to more than 1.5 million veterans, more than any other state, continues to expand services aimed at supporting those who have served. The FVA grants funds a wide range of services including clinical counseling, employment support, home modification, financial assistance, transportation, and legal aid. The grants also support Veteran Treatment Courts and peer support initiatives.

“Veterans receive vital services and assistance from these nonprofits and local governments across the state,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner. “These Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will help thousands of Texas veterans and their family members.”

Funding for these grants is largely generated through the Texas Lottery Commission’s veteran-support games, along with individual donations collected through driver's license applications, handgun licenses, hunting and fishing licenses, and vehicle registrations. Since 2009, the FVA program has been awarded over $359 million through 1,600 grants, making a significant impact on the lives of Texas veterans and their families.

The Texas Veterans Commission remains committed to improving the quality of life for veterans across the state by advocating for their needs, providing direct support, and administering benefits like the Hazlewood Act for education.
