Ted Cruz Leads Efforts to Designate June as 'Life Month'

Senator Ted Cruz (R) has introduced a Senate resolution to designate June as “Life Month,” marking the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s historic 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and ended nearly five decades of federal abortion protections.

“Every human life is worthy of protection, and it is especially incumbent upon Americans and lawmakers to protect the most vulnerable among us,” Sen. Cruz said. “Designating June as Life Month is a recommitment to the American principle that every life has dignity. I call on my colleagues in the Senate to swiftly pass this resolution.”

The resolution, cosponsored by 28 Republican senators including Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), seeks to recognize the value of unborn life and commemorate the court’s decision to return abortion regulation to the states.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.-04) introduced a companion resolution in the House, delivering a forceful defense of the pro-life movement.

“For decades abortion advocates have gone to extraordinary lengths to ignore, trivialize, and cover up the battered baby victim,” Smith said. “This resolution… calls our nation to reject willful blindness to the realities of abortion… and show love and compassion to both mother and child through meaningful assistance and support.”

The measure has received backing from a broad coalition of national pro-life organizations including Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), National Right to Life, SBA Pro-Life America, Students for Life, and Heritage Action.

“Life is the first and most fundamental human right. Without it, no other right can exist,” said Kristen Waggoner, CEO of ADF. “It’s fitting to commemorate the historic Supreme Court ruling… America must now take the next step forward.”

Janae Stracke, Vice President of Heritage Action, praised the resolution as “bold and historic,” saying it appropriately honors the thousands of lives saved following the Dobbs ruling.

“The landmark Dobbs victory rightly restored power to protect unborn children in the law to the people and their elected representatives,” added Marilyn Musgrave, Vice President of Government Affairs at SBA Pro-Life America.

Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life, called the resolution “fitting,” saying, “In memory of all the children lost to abortion, it is fitting that June be recognized as Life Month.”

While the resolution is unlikely to move forward in the Democrat-controlled Senate, its introduction underscores the enduring efforts by Republican lawmakers and pro-life groups to shift the national narrative and legislative focus on abortion rights following the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
