House Passes 'Clean' Continuing Resolution, Congress Reacts

The House of Representatives has just passed a continuing resolution (CR) that prevents a government shutdown for seven weeks and now heads to the Senate. Members of Congress have taken to social media to express their thoughts.

The resolution passed with 217 votes in favor and 212 opposed along strict party lines, although Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Victoria Spartz (R-IN) voted against, while Representative Jared Golden (D-CO) voted in favor.

"Today, House Republicans passed a clean, short-term continuing resolution to fully fund the core functions of the federal government, so that President Trump and his administration can continue to identify waste, fraud, and abuse of American taxpayer dollars, protect our borders, and support Americans, including our veterans, military families, first responders, and seniors," said Representative John Rutherford (R-FL) in a statement. "Most importantly, by passing this stopgap bill, we are ensuring that a costly government shutdown does not fall on the American people."

Rep. Rutherford further expressed that "this short-term continuing resolution today gives Congress time to approve the twelve appropriations bills through regular order and keep our country open for the American people."

Similarly, Representative Scott Franklin (R-FL) emphasized how "House Republicans acted responsibly to prevent a government shutdown while keeping our focus on fiscal discipline."

"This clean continuing resolution keeps the government open and protects essential services, but just as importantly, it gives us time to finish the job of passing full-year appropriations through regular order," Rep. Franklin continued. "That's the only way to restore accountability, rein in wasteful spending, and deliver a budget that reflects the will of voters. Now, the Senate must do its part."

Representative August Pfluger (R-TX) took to X to riff on Democrats' staunch opposition to the bill, saying, "it's ironic, now that they are no longer in power, Democrats seem to have forgotten their years of warning that government shutdowns are reckless and harmful to seniors, veterans, and working families."

Ahead of the vote, Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) responded to a post by Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), who initially shared that Republicans had "found out the answer to the question of how serious Democrats are about funding the government. The answer is, not at all."

Rep. Gosar replied, "Queue the Schumer Shutdown."

Representative Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) shared a less hostile response, echoing the sentiments of Reps. Rutherford and Franklin.

"While it's unfortunate that Congress must rely on another continuing resolution, this clean CR maintains essential government functions and provides uninterrupted federal support for our service members and veterans," he commented. "We must return to regular order and restore our constitutional appropriations process. This two-month extension allows us to complete that work responsibly."
