Greg Abbott Announces Bid for Fourth Term as Texas Governor

Governor Greg Abbott (R) has announced that he will seek a fourth term as governor of Texas, launching his reelection campaign at a golf course in Houston, the same place where his political career began more than three decades ago.

"This is the place where I first ran for public office," said Abbott, referencing his early judicial campaign for the 129th District Court. "We won Harris County then, and we are going to win Harris County again this election."

Since taking office in 2015, Abbott has championed a host of conservative priorities, including cutting property taxes, resaping the state's bail system, and enacting sweeping immigration and election measures.

Most recently, he signed a $1 billion school voucher bill into law and approved the state's mid-decade congressional redistricting plan. Abbott has also overseen major disaster responses to Hurricane Harvey and Winter Storm Uri, and spearheaded the controversial border security initiative known as Operation Lone Star.

Before becoming the 48th governor of Texas, Abbott served as a state trial judge, a justice on the Texas Supreme Court, and the state's longest-serving attorney general.

Abbott enters the 2026 race with $87 million in campaign funds and two Republican challengers, but remains the clear favorite.

"We will finish what we started," said Abbott. "We will lead Texas into its glorious future."

If Abbott is reelected and serves a full term, he would become the longest-serving governor in Texas history.
